Article overview
How to get to Ericeira
You’ll find Ericeira along the Atlantic coast within the municipality of Mafra in the Lisbon District, only 35 kilometers (22 miles) northwest of the capital.
We rented a car and drove directly to Eirceira from Lisbon airport. The drive was easy and only took 30 minutes. If you’re planning a surf trip to Ericeira, I highly recommend having a car to reach all the different spots easily.
I loved exploring this region and we would not have been able to see as much as we did without one. If you’re joining a surf camp, check to see if they offer airport transfers and transportation within the city so you won’t have to worry about renting a car.
You can also take the bus which takes around 1 hour. Buses to Ericeira depart from the Campo Grande bus terminal in Lisbon, from around 06:20 to 23:40. Tickets can be purchased at the terminal or online in advance.
Surfing Ericeira
Ericeira is renowned for its consistent and diverse surf breaks. The area boasts over 60 surf spots within a short distance, including the famous Coxos, Ribeira d’Ilhas and Foz do Lizandro. These breaks offer a variety of waves, from mellow beach breaks to powerful reefs.
In 2011, Ericeira was designated as the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe and the second in the world. This prestigious status highlights the area’s exceptional surf quality and the commitment to preserving its natural and surf heritage.
The town of Ericeira exudes a laid-back, surf-centric vibe that is both welcoming and infectious. The local community is passionate about surfing, and the town is filled with surf shops, cafes, and bars where you can meet fellow surfers, share stories, and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.
Is Ericeira good for beginner surfers?
Absolutely, Ericeira is an excellent destination for beginner surfers! While it’s renowned for its world-class waves and challenging surf spots, it also offers a variety of beach breaks that are perfect for those just starting out.
When to visit
Thanks to its mild climate and location, you can surf in Ericeira all year round. While the summer months are ideal for beginners with smaller, more manageable waves, winter brings larger swells that attract advanced surfers seeking more challenging conditions.
Remember a wetsuit to keep you warm. A 3/2mm suit is the most versatile option, perfect for spring, early autumn, and mild summer mornings and evenings. While I do know some opt for a 4/3 mm most of the year.
📲 Pro tip >> MEO is the best website for checking the surf forecast in Portugal. I heard a few locals talking about it and the information turned out to be accurate.
7 best surf spots in Ericeira
The best part about Ericeira’s beaches and surf spots is that free parking is available nearly everywhere. Of, course, the summer months are busier, but then you can take the Beach Bus which runs from mid-June to mid-September. Just download their app.
So let’s get to the reason why Ericeira is often hailed as Europe’s surf capital; Here are some of the most popular surf spots and beaches.
1. Ribeira d’Ilhas
Ribeira d’Ilhas is one of the most famous surf spots in Ericeira and a key part of the World Surfing Reserve. Known for its long, powerful right-hand point break, it’s a favorite with everyone from beginners to pros year-round. It is easily accessible, just 3 kilometers from the center of town.
The beach itself is a picturesque stretch of golden sand framed by rugged cliffs. I love coming here for sunset. On the beach, there is a big restaurant with a terrace, a surf school that rents out boards, and a big parking lot. It is busy here pretty much all year, so I often had trouble finding parking, especially in the afternoon.
Wave type: Long and often mellow right-hand point break.
Best conditions: Works best with a northwest swell and an easterly wind. Works on all tides, usually best around mid-tide.
2. Coxos
Coxos is renowned for its fast, hollow waves and is considered one of the best right-hand reef breaks in Europe. It’s a spot for experienced surfers only. There is also a break on the other side of the bay, called Crazy Left.
There’s a sidewalk the whole way from Ericeira but beware of some very steep hills. From the center of town, it took me about 1 hour and 20 minutes to walk, and 10 minutes to drive. You’ll find some parking spots down by the ocean, but no cafés or surf rentals. Rapture Surfcamp, however, is just a few minutes away.
If you’re not quite ready to get in the ocean here, I still recommend checking it out to see the pros in action.
Wave type: Right-hand reef break.
Best conditions: Performs best with a northwest swell and a southeast wind on low tide.
3. Foz do Lizandro
Foz do Lizandro is a beach break with multiple peaks and sandy bottoms, making it an excellent spot for beginners and intermediate surfers. Located just a 5-minute drive or 40-minute walk from the town center, it is busy here most days. However, the beach is huge so it never feels crowded.
On most days, there is a left on the south side of the beach and an a-frame in the middle. The north side of the beach is rocky with two reef breaks: Lage dos Tubos and Limipicos.
There is a large car park and a boardwalk with several bars and restaurants down on the beach. Right next to it, you’ll find another Rapture Surfcamp location as well as Lapoint Surf Camp.
Wave type: Beach break, left and right.
Best conditions: Works well with a west or northwest swell and an easterly wind, on low to mid tide.
4. Praia dos Pescadores (Fisherman’s Beach)
Located near the center of Ericeira, this spot offers a mellow surfing experience. It’s ideal for beginners, but be careful on bigger days when the rip along the pier can pull you out of the harbor.
It gets very busy with surf schools here when it’s the only spot small enough to surf. The proximity to the town center means you can easily walk here and grab a bite or explore local shops after your session.
Wave type: Beach break, left or right depending on the sandbanks and swell.
Best conditions: Best with a big northwest swell, light winds and low tide.
5. São Julião
São Julião is a picturesque beach with consistent waves, suitable for all skill levels. On bigger days you can even get barreled here. It is the southernmost spot we checked out, about a 12-minute drive from Ericeira.
The main peak closest to the parking area is very crowded, but you can walk along the beach towards Praia da Vigia and often find a wave you can have all to yourself.
The long stretch of sand provides plenty of space, even on busier days. It is my favorite beach in Ericeira, and I also loved sitting at the restaurant at the top enjoying a Pastél de Nata with the view.
Wave type: Beach break, multiple peaks with lefts and rights.
Best conditions: Works best with west or northwest swell and wind from east on low tide.
6. Praia do Sul
Praia do Sul, also known as South Beach and Praia da Baleia, is considered the main beach of Ericeria. I walked here many times and enjoyed the views of waves and the majestic Hotel Vila Galé Ericeira.
Its central location means you are close to surf shops where you can rent boards, cute cafés and a scenic boulevard. There are several breaks here that only work with bigger swells. During summer it is mostly flat.
The north side is best for experienced surfers with a right point/reef break. On the inside, you have another break suited for less experienced surfers in smaller conditions. And to the south, you’ll find a lefthander.
Wave type: Right-hand reef breaks, one left.
Best conditions: Works best with a northwest/west swell and an easterly wind, on mid-tide.
7. Matadouro
Matadouro is located just north of Ericeira in front of the skate park at the Boardriders Quiksilver store. It is a versatile spot that offers both left and right-hand waves, although the rights are best.
I’d say the main breaks are only suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers, but beginners can learn on the reform break on the inside. Watch out for the many rocks on low tide.
During the summer months, there is a food truck in the car park and board rental. There are also outdoor showers and toilets.
Wave type: Right-hand reef break, one left.
Best conditions: Works well with a west/northwest swell and light winds from the east.
Best surf camps Ericeira
In my mind, Ericeira is the best place in Europe to join a surf camp. I also love Corralejo on Fuerteventura, however, Ericeira just inches in front.
There are so many different great surf spots to choose from, cool surf shops and cafés that remind me of Bali and many other like-minded people who want to better themselves while having fun. Just how I like it!

This beautiful surf house and academy is set in a calm residential area, close to Ribeira D’Ilhas Beach. What I love about this place is the beautiful garden and Marco, the super positive host and instructor. Having a teacher who is eager for you to learn makes all the difference, I have also experienced the opposite.
The classes are always small so you get the intention you need while also having space to try on your own. Everyone from beginners to advanced surfers are welcome and the lessons are tailored to your skill level.

3. Rapture Surfcamps Ericeira
I also have to mention Rapture Surfcamps. They are a well-known name, I have already talked about them in my Bali yoga and surf camps post, and their Ericeira locations live up to the reputation. Next to Coxos, you’ll find Rapture Surf Villa and next to Foz do Lizandro is Rapture Surfcamp.
Catering to all levels, from beginners to advanced surfers, Rapture provides professional coaching with a focus on personalized instruction. Small group sizes ensure that each participant gets ample attention and tailored feedback.
Top things to do Ericeira
Beyond the waves, Ericeira offers breathtaking coastal scenery with rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and a charming old town.
Get back to nature
As mentioned above, the golden sandy beaches like Praia dos Pescadores and São Julião are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and beach volleyball.
The cliffs surrounding Ericeira provide excellent vantage points for breathtaking sunsets, and the scenic coastal paths are perfect for leisurely walks or picnics. I don’t know how many hours I have spent just walking around here taking in every sight.
Beyond the beaches, the nearby Sintra-Cascais Natural Park is ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and bird-watching, with trails that offer stunning views of the coastline and lush landscapes.
Explore the Old Town
Ericeira’s charming old town is a delightful maze of narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses with blue trim, and vibrant markets. If you like me, love colors and patterns, you’ll be in awe of this place. I don’t know how many times I said, I want those tiles or that door in my house.
The town’s central square, Praça da República, is a great place to relax with a coffee and soak in the local atmosphere. Don’t miss the Igreja de São Pedro, a beautiful church with intricate tilework and a serene ambiance.
Eat your heart out
Ericeira is a paradise for lovers of food and cute cafés. Given its coastal location, seafood is a highlight, with many restaurants serving fresh catches of the day. Be sure to try the local specialty, “percebes” (gooseneck barnacles), and the delicious grilled sardines.
And don’t forget to visit Taberna Lebre for the best Prego Rolls (steak sandwich) in town. The name “Prego” translates to “nail” in Portuguese, which refers to the way the garlic is hammered into the meat.
I especially loved Villa Brunch Café, Bocca Pizzeria Romana, Onegai Sushi Bar and MIZU. For a casual dining experience, head to the local markets or food stalls at Praça do Jogo da Bola. And, of course, get at least a few boxes of Pastéis de Nata from O Pãozinho das Marias. Yum!
🥘 For my fellow foodies >> Don’t miss this 10 Tastings Food Tour. You’ll learn about the culinary history of the region, visit a fresh market and 5 eateries that are favorites among locals. You can thank me later!
Dive into culture
Ericeira has a rich cultural heritage that is worth exploring. Visit the Museu da Ericeira to learn about the town’s maritime history and its evolution from a fishing village to a surfing hotspot.
The spectacular Mafra National Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a short drive away and offers a glimpse into Portugal’s royal past with its grand architecture and extensive library. If you’re as obsessed with castles and palaces as I am, your jaw will hit the floor.
Throughout the year, Ericeira hosts various festivals and events, celebrating everything from surfing to traditional music and dance.
Shop until you drop
I love shopping in places that have all the surf brand stores, you can’t go wrong with Billabong and Rip Curl. Be sure to also stop by Ericeira Surf & Skate Outlet, I got a new wetsuit for cheap. I also tried on several jackets, but unfortunately, they wouldn’t fit in my carry-on.
In addition, Ericeira is home to some of the cutest boutiques you’ll ever see, two of my favorites are Harvest Moon Boutique and Biju With Love.
Take a day trip
Just a short drive away, you’ll find the enchanting town of Sintra, known for its fairy-tale palaces, including the colorful Pena Palace and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira. If you’re a castle lover like me, it is a must.
We also drove up to Nazaré from Ericeira to watch the biggest waves in the world. Only a handful of people can actually surf here, but it was so fun to see these waves with my own eyes. I also loved the charming old town and beautiful golden beach.
Peniche, on the other hand, is a surfer’s paradise with its world-class waves and beautiful beaches. Just like Eirceira, it is a great place to learn to surf. Beyond surfing, you can explore the historic Peniche Fortress and take a boat trip to the pristine Berlengas Islands.
